The academy of country music awards are given annually in a large televised ceremony and are considered a top honor within the country music industry. Beginning in 1967 in Nashville, the country music awards are given out by the country music association, which is the first organization ever to be formed for the purpose of promoting a musical genre.
Much like the Academy Awards for film, the academy of country music awards are given to those artists who receive the highest number of votes from academy members. Categories include Single of the Year, Video of the Year and Best New Artist categories. However, the most prestigious awards of the night are Entertainer of the Year and Best Male and Female Vocalist categories. Previous winners in these categories include Kenny Chesney, Brad Paisley and newcomer Carrie Underwood.
There are also special achievement awards, humanitarian awards and awards given to those musicians considered to be the best player of a specific instrument, such as fiddle or guitar. The award list is so extensive that many are presented in a separate, non televised event held the previous night. The academy of country music awards also recognizes the best live music venue in the Best Nightclub category and grants awards to local country radio stations across the U.S. as well as singling out the best on air talent.
And although the academy of country music awards remains the event of the year, the academy sponsors various events year round. These events recognize musical success by year, fundraising activities and even gaming challenges. Additionally, the academy has set up a foundation through which charitable work is done in different aspects of the community, centered on how music can promote healing and growth.
The academy of country music awards remains one of the most widely viewed televised awards show and seems to grow bigger in scope with each passing year.
